WORK/LIFE FIRST EDITION

This is the cover of the First Edition, illustrated by Darren Booth

PRAISE FOR THE FIRST WORK/LIFE

This book is so much more than eye candy; it is a feast. With luscious illustrations and photography backed by engaging profiles, it’s a peek into the creatives’ studios and sketchbooks, giving a sense of their process. It feels so intimate it’s almost a guilty pleasure. Every detail is considered, thought out, flawless, and is there only to enhance the great body of work exhibited by these exceptionally talented artists. Congratulations Janine for the idea, the design, and for enriching our lives with art that is beautifully brought to our doorstep.

—Zahra Al-Harazi, Foundry Creative Inc

Our studio gets many illustration and photography promotions, and it’s unusual that we keep any. This one was different. I saw many copies on designers’ desks in my own studio. The editorial format was fresh and engaging, and the design was elegant and understated, allowing the photography and illustration to shine. The juxtaposition of illustration roughs and studio environments against the finished work added great insight into how illustrators work. Also, the writing is credited to the designer, a rare combination of talent in one person.

— Carey George, Up Inc

I don’t often keep illustration or photography directories, but I kept this one on my desk. The size and weight of the book are fitting for a novel, which reflects its added benefit—it is full of stories. It’s visually compelling. Each artist has been interviewed and their story accompanies their work. The typography is clean and unobtrusive, which enables designers to easily visualize how the illustrations or photos would work in a layout.

— Pamela Lee, Samata Mason Design Inc

Without the shadow of a doubt, this document proves that placing artists in their environment is an appealing approach. Work/Life offers a close-up look by inviting us to see their work behind the scenes. Using uncoated paper helps to immerse us in the day-to-day practice of their craft.

Bucci, Laura

!!!

At Laura Bucci Handmade inspiration comes from seeing the world through images and text. I’m an Italian-Canadian, Vancouver-based artist designing and making cup cozies, wall art, tote bags and more but teaching you some new vocabulary along the way.

The inspiration behind my work comes from my culturally varied background. Moving from country to country was exciting but also challenging as I tried to speak the new language and move around the new culture. Life began in Toronto (Canada), followed by various locations in Italy, Lybia, Malta, back to Italy, and finally back to Canada when I was 16 – specifically Vancouver but not before Sudbury.

I draw inspiration from my love of culture, language and imagery to create image/text compositions in various languages. Whether on a cup cozy, a fabric pin, a wall art panel, or a tote bag my aim is to delight you with wonderful pairings and to excite you to learn a new word or two. And perhaps you'll gain a new appreciation for your mother tongue as well.

Dear Libby

!!!

Kendyl Lauzon has no idea how to write about herself and sound interesting. She likes to draw, she likes to stitch, she likes little things and she loves her dog, Breakfast. Each morning they go out to enjoy the sights and sounds, get up close to objects of interest, and hoard records of the characters they pass at the park. While he has introduced her to an entirely new world of curiosity, she finds herself drifting further into a state of nostalgia that is familiar to that of her childhood, where imagination is not to be questioned, it is to be explored. Breakfast is definitely the best way to start any day.

Hajek, Olaf

Olaf Hajek is one of Germany’s most renowned illustrators and has, through countless works, developed his personal and frequently awarded style. Hajek decomposes the borders between authenticity and thought, South American folklore, mythology, religion, history, and geography. More than anything else his work explores the opposition between imagination and reality in the context of western cultures. Hajek focuses enthusiastically on wonder, heroic acts, hallucinations, and fairytale motifs. With artistic virtuosity and intellectual calculation he relocates and recombines various captions of reality, planting them within new and exciting mystical connotative frameworks. Disproportional figures are often depicted posed in front of theatrical fore- and backgrounds.
